Abstract

Methylglyoxal (2-oxopropanal) may be assayed in chemical and biological systems by derivatisation with 1,2-diamino-4,5-dimethoxybenzene to form 6,7-dimethoxy-2-methylquinoxaline. Methods are described to produce 1,2-diamino-4,5-dimethoxybenzene dihydrochloride (the derivatising agent), 6,7-dimethoxy-2-methylquinoxaline (the methylglyoxal adduct) and 6,7-dimethoxy-2,3-dimethylquinoxaline (an internal standard). Liquid chromatography data of the methylglyoxal adduct and internal standard with spectrophotometric and fluorimetric detection are presented. The purity of these compounds was suitable for their use in assay, recovery experiments and internal standardisation in the analysis of trace amounts of methylglyoxal.
